Quick answer

What happens at a dental cleaning?

The doctor examines your teeth and gums and reviews your X-rays. Then our hygienist removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline, polishes your teeth and shows you anything to watch at home. Most adults come back every six months. If the exam finds gum disease, a deep cleaning is planned and priced separately.

Why it matters

Why regular cleanings matter

Brushing and flossing remove most plaque, but tartar that hardens near the gumline only comes off with a professional cleaning. Left there, it irritates the gums and can lead to gum disease.

The exam that comes with it finds cavities, cracked fillings and gum problems while they are small and easier to treat. Many of the emergencies we see started as something a routine visit would have caught.

A routine visit checks

  • Cavities and worn or cracked fillings
  • Gum health, including bleeding and pocket depth
  • Tartar buildup above and below the gumline
  • Your bite, jaw and signs of grinding
  • Any spot in the mouth that needs a closer look
Your visit

How a cleaning visit works

  1. Exam with the doctor

Every new patient starts with the doctor, who checks your teeth and gums and decides what kind of cleaning you need.

  2. Digital X-rays

Low-dose digital X-rays show what the eye can't, such as cavities between teeth and the bone around them.

  3. Cleaning

Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar, then polishes your teeth and flosses between them.

  4. Your plan

We tell you what we found, what can wait and what can't, and what any treatment would cost before we do it.

Questions patients ask

Teeth cleaning questions

Can I get a cleaning without seeing the doctor?

Every new patient, and anyone the doctor hasn't seen yet, starts with an exam. That is how we know what kind of cleaning you need. The cleaning comes right after it.

Which days can I get the exam and the cleaning together?

Monday, Tuesday and Friday are the days we can do both in one visit. Our hygienist sees patients Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Our team confirms the exact time when they call you.

What does the $65 first visit include?

A full exam, digital X-rays and a basic cleaning, plus a free Smile Design consultation. It is for new patients with healthy gums. A deep cleaning, if you need one, is priced separately.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Most adults every six months. Patients treated for gum disease often need cleanings every three to four months.

Does a cleaning hurt?

Most people feel scraping and some pressure but no pain. If your gums are sensitive, tell us and we'll go slower or numb the area.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. Our team speaks English and Spanish.
