It depends on how much of the tooth is gone. A small chip is often smoothed or rebuilt with tooth-colored bonding, sometimes in one visit. A larger chip on a front tooth may call for a porcelain veneer, and a big break or a tooth already weakened by damage usually needs a crown. Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clear away debris. If there is swelling, hold a cold compress on the outside of your cheek. If the edge feels sharp, avoid touching it with your tongue and chew on the other side.

Call us soon. Sharp or intense sensitivity, a large missing piece, or a chip that exposes a dark or red area can mean the damage goes deeper than the surface.
Call right away. A bite that has changed, a loose tooth, or damage after a fall or impact also needs prompt care. We can often see emergencies the same day.
Go to the ER or call 911 for trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling that spreads into the face or neck, or a serious facial injury.
